Bishopstown & Wilton

Bishopstown & Wilton is a suburb of Cork situated in the south west of the city centre. 

The area is always buzzing with Munster Technological University and Cork University Hospital providing a constant stream of activity. 

Bishopstown and Wilton is mainly residential but there is still plenty to do without venturing into Cork City Centre!

For example there is a large selection of shops at Bishopstown & Wilton Shopping Centres and an amazing variety of local cuisine in the amazing pubs and restaurants in the Bishopstown & Wilton area.

Some of the other industry in the area includes an IDA (Industrial Development Authority) Business Park which hosts companies like Boston Scientific and Trend Micro.

The nearest train station is Kent Station in Cork City Centre. The easiest way to get here is on the 205 bus!

History & Heritage 

Bishopstown is a literal translation of the Irish name Baile an Easpaig. Sources show it has been called this since the mid 16th century and in the 18th century bishop of Cork and Ross, Peter Browne, built his country residence there calling it Bishopstown House.

Although not as clear Wilton seems to have been have been named by a team of dyers working at a woolen mill in the area.

Attractions

While CIT & CUH may be the two things that bring most people into the area there are also a lot of other places to check out. For the shopping fans there is Wilton Shopping Centre. If you are looking for a fun night out why not check out a race meeting at Curaheen Greyhound Stadium

The newly developed Murphys Farm Playground is a great place to bring the kids to burn off some steam. 

If you happen to be free on a Tuesday afternoon you have to check out the Wilton Farmers Market in the shopping centre car park!

Culture & Activity

Sport & Clubs

There are lots of different sports facilities in the Bishopstown & Wilton area. 

Why not try out some of the local clubs Highfield RFC, Wilton United FC, Bishopstown GAABishopstown Lawn Tennis Club or Bishopstown Pitch & Putt.

Leisureworld Bishopstown is host to lots of different facilities; Swimming Pools, Gym and Fitness Studios, Sauna & Steam Rooms, 4 Astro Turf Pitches and a range of classes to suit all abilites.

There are also some gyms in the area such as Crossfit le Cheile, My Bodyworks and Max Life Fitness.

If you are looking to check out some football Bishopstown Stadium is where Cork Football Men’s team trains and is the home venue for Cork City Women’s teams. 

Eating & Drinking

For the hungry ones there are some fantastic options in the Bishopstown and Wilton areas. 

For fantastic pub grub and carvery stop into the Bishopstown BarModel Farm Bar & Bistro, Rendezvous or the Wilton Pub & Restaurant.

If you fancy sampling some of the finest local dishes check out the Wilton Farmers Market – every Tuesday Morning between 10am – 2.30pm!

For something quick and cheerful check out Dino’s & O’ Reilly’s Fish & Chip two top class chippers in the area.

Or some Italian flair check out Gallo & Galetti. But don’t forget to book in advance!

Music 

For those looking for live music check out theback bar at Bishopstown Bar which regularly hosts gigs. 

Religion

Catholic services can be found weekly in St. Joseph’s Church and Church of the Real Presence.

There is also the New Life Church Cork based in Ardarostig in Bishopstown.

Education

Primary Education:

Some of the local primary schools are Gaelscoil Uí Riada, St. Catherine’s National School, Scoil An Spioraid Naomh (Boys & Girls) & Cork University Hospital School. There is also St. Gabriel’s Special School for those with learning difficulties and special needs.

Secondary:

There is three main secondary schools in the Bishopstown/Wilton area. The all boys Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh, all girls Mount Mercy College and the mixed Bishopstown Community School.

Third Level: 

Munster Technological University (formerly Cork Institute of Technology) and Cork Training Centre are based in Bishopstown. University College Cork is also close by!
